Baker D. Chirico designed by March Studio

A store of the Australian bakery Baker D. Chirico was redesigned by March Studio to reflect their concept of simplicity. The Melbourne-based architecture office March Studio developed a new interior design for a store of the renowned Australian bakery Baker D. Chirico located in Carlton, Australia.
The concept for the interior design was inspired by the concept of Baker D. Chirico, who aims to produce a simple product made with few ingredients that is then traditionally displayed before being sold over the counter to the customer.
Consequently the architect’s followed in the design of the store the simple purpose of cooling bread that comes fresh out of the oven, to be display without packaging - ready to be portioned and sold: They created an undulation of CNC routed plywood forms that cover the wall behind the counter as well as the ceiling of the bakery.
The plywood forms subtractions from the wall to function as the display areas for bread: Shelves of varying depths and heights allow accommodating bread of various sizes that can be re-arranged and altered according to mood or season.
In contrast to the wave-like bread wall, the store’s center counter is formed in the style of a giant chopping board or working bench including space to store knifes and tools that will age and receive patina with long-term used.
