From the 3rd of May to the 12th August, there is an opportunity for a whole new generation to thoroughly investigate the phenomenon of the Bauhaus when an exhibition of some 400 works opens at London's Barbican Centre.
Fundamentally the Bauhaus spirit was a utopian vision seeking to change society in the aftermath of the first world war. In just 14 turbulent years form 1919 until it closed in 1933, the arts rule book was comprehensively shredded under the drive of artistic visionaries such as Walter Gropius, Paul Klee and Mies Van Der Rohe.
It is the most penetrating exhibition into the Bauhaus for many decades. Some of the less familiar works demonstrate the breadth of research from architecture, to furniture design, theatre, performance industrial design, fine art and beyond. No other single school or institution has had a greater impact working across such a broad spectrum of the arts. No other school has indeed defined the arts in such broad terms, it could also be argued.
