Big entrance – with the world’s largest swinging doors
Photo: Luc Roymans
This relatively small three-storey house in Antwerp offers us one superlative: the garden is brought inside via the world’s largest swinging doors.
They weigh four tonnes and are six metres high. They enable two levels of the house to open completely onto the garden. The open architecture of this renovated home, which features the kitchen and living areas on the lower level, has one wall completely in glass. This transparency is carried through the upper storey, which is entirely glazed, meaning that the house is flooded with light in any weather.
In order to perfect the feeling of the great outdoors, the kitchen counter is on casters and can be pushed outside in good weather. The doors, which are made of insulated glass, were designed by the Belgian design studio Sculp IT.
