Biomedical Institute in Chongqing

Building regulations required the institute to be set back from the River Yangtze, so that it was not possible to adopt the traditional form of hillside architecture found in this city. The reinforced concrete skeleton-frame structure with infill panels is covered on the outside by a skin of concrete hollow blocks. The two long facades parallel to the river form a unifying enclosure for a wide range of technical functions, which are nevertheless reflected in the lighting, spatial organization and fenestration. The building is divided into legible zones by deep incisions in the outer walls. The incisions extendas alleyways through the entire building and open up views from the road to the river, thereby creating the desired link between the architecture and the landscape.
