The work of the French designers Ronan and Erwan Bouroullec is on display in the exhibition “Bivouac” at Centre Pompidou-Metz until July 30, 2012.
Ronan Bouroullec and his brother Erwan Bouroullec have been working together for about ten years now. Their career took off in 2000 with the design of a space for Issey Miyake’s new collection of A-Poc clothes in Paris and the a new kind of office system, Joyn, in 2002 for the chairman of Vitra Rolf Fehlbaum occurred.
Today, Ronan and Erwan Bouroullec design for numerous manufacturers - among them Vitra, Kvadrat, Kartell, Ligne Roset, Alessi and Cappellini.
The projects shown at the Centre Pompidou-Metz until July 30, 2012 include work from the past ten years, alongside examples of the Bourellecs’ research projects.
On display are for example the Lianes lamps that Ronan and Erwan Bourellec designed in 2010: The lamps are completely sheathed in leather with the intention to conceal the technical aspects behind a natural material and an unusual shape. The sewing technique and the length of cable leave room for a certain amount of adjustment, offering the user a great degree of freedom in their use and composition.
The Ploum sofa has been designed by the Bourellecs’ for Ligne Roset in 2011: A sponge-like couch out of stretch-fabric upholstery and ultra-flexible resilient foam. The shape and proportions were specially studied to allow the body to recline in many different positions on the sofa’s surface without having to deal with edges. According to the designers, "the use of a stretch fabric is symbolic of our contemporary lifestyles, in which versatility and comfort seem to us to be essential."
The Alcove sofa features an unusually high backrest that allows the user to withdraw physically and psychologically from the surrounding by creating a new interior space within the space it has been placed in. Two sofas placed opposite to each other create a special place for a private conversation – which makes their installation especially benefitial in collectively used environments such as work spaces.
