Bridge near Dornbirn

This new concrete bridge replaces a structure dating from 1934. The curved underside of the arch is rotated about its axis by 50° over a span of roughly 20 m. In this way, the bridge responds to the line of the road, which bends away in opposite directions at each end. This twofold curvature ensures greater rigidity, so that a thickness of only 45 cm is necessary at the crown of the arch. Concrete was also saved by supporting the ends of the structure directly on the rock; and the thickness of the balustrades allowed them to be executed with a height of only 75 cm. At their ends, they are offset to each other, enhancing the sculptural character of the bridge. Its elegant form can be seen to best effect from the valley below.
