By the Water: Beach Building in the Dune Landscape of the Twistesee

The new beach building rises from the dune landscape in a curved structure. At the same time, it melds with the landscape. Its front side is oriented towards the beach promenade, so that guests constantly have a view of the bay and the water. In the new design of the bathing area, the architects concentrated on its openness and breadth. The curved volume of the building takes up the curved line of the promenade and receives its guests as an entryway through which they enter the gentle dune landscape to access the beach. To the north and south of the beach area, there are children’s playgrounds. A large oak tree stands at the centre of the beach area. The building’s façade of Corten steel contrasts with the green landscape and fits in with the colours of the dune landscape. In order to increase the degree of brightness inside and bring natural light into the inner depths of the building, the architects have installed skylights. Furthermore, the changing-room area features translucent glass surfaces which allow daylight into the interior. The façade itself has a rhythmic interplay of large steel panels and glass surfaces.
The beach offers many amenities such as a café, changing rooms, bathrooms, showers on the shore, sundecks and several playgrounds. The front façade forms a clear line which includes the accesses to the changing rooms as well. The café was built on a raised base plate of wood. In this area, the closed façade can be completely opened up with folding doors, so that guests may sit surrounded by nature in the warm summer months. A photovoltaic system provides the building with energy. Good insulation and triple glazing help keep transmission loss to a minimum.
The new beach area offers guests not only a compelling environment for their leisure time and a diverse gastronomic experience, it is also barrier-free and thus accessible to all.
