Camper is at the Volvo Ocean Race 2011-2012 - in a pavilion designed by Shigeru Ban architects.
The Spanish shoe company Camper unveiled a pavilion designed by Japanese architect Shigeru Ban at the race village for the Volvo Ocean Race in Alicante last month.
Camper, who is the official sponsor of the Emirates Team New Zealand at this year’s Volvo Ocean Race, commissioned the office of Shigeru Ban architects to design a pavilion that can travel with the race and be set up in Sanya, Miami and Lorient. At each stopover the pavilion will house not only a store to sell Camper’s shoes and merchandise of the Camper Emirates Team New Zealand, but also a wide range of activities for all ages including an interactive kiosk, jazz sessions, gin and tonic master classes.
The pavilion that Shigeru Ban designed for Camper stands in a stark contrast to the square tented and metal structures of the race village surrounding it: The rotunda of Camper pavilion is made out of cardboard columns – one of Shigeru Ban’s signature materials – that are six meters in height and of varying widths ranging from 30cm to 60cm. The variation of the width allows placing the columns inside of one another when the dismantled pavilion is to be moved to another location.
Shigeru Ban states: “Moving a building is very unusual which is why the design came from the motion of moving”.
