Chemist's Shop in Aspern

Situated in the 22nd district of Vienna, the development occupies a site that extends between two roads. The layout is in the form of an open sequence of spaces with internal courtyards that lend the organizational system a quality of transparency. The overall concept is dominated by a sense of light and by the visual links that have been created with the outside world and the natural surroundings. The classical counter dividing staff from customers is replaced here by open consultation points. Showcase elements suspended from the ceiling articulate the interior into a series of spatial layers – rather like stage scenery – placing customers in the role of players when they enter this dramatic space. The service facilities are complemented by a glazed seminar room, a Benedictine herb garden and an extension into the virtual dimension. In this way, a whole environment is created around the theme of pharmacy, with space not only for product-related functions, but for social and cultural encounters as well.
