Circles and shadows: Birmingham Library by mecanoo architecten

An intricate curtain of countless aluminum rings surrounds the new municipal library in Birmingham. The symbolism of this façade has quickly become a popular subject of various interpretations and discussions among residents, visitors and critics. Three films show this architectural highlight from various perspectives: one clip features atmospheric moods and shows the effects created by the façade on the interior space. An animated film documents the spatial interconnections, and a 10-minute video polls visitors for their opinions. Taken together, these films engender the image of a blithe, graceful new construction that both symbolizes and reinforces the city's self-awareness as a place of learning and culture.
