Cities and climate change

The figures are impressive: Berlin aims to reduce its CO2 emissions by 40% by the year 2020, London is planning to lower them by 60% by 2025 and Sydney by 70% by 2030.  Melbourne and Copenhagen are even more ambitious, aiming to be completely CO2-neutral by 2025. How realistic these goals are, remains to be seen. In some cases, it can reasonably be suspected that the goals are merely political wishful thinking. Municipalities sometimes tend to make formal decisions without being at all aware of their own emissions and their actual realistic room for manoeuvre. Nevertheless, cities around the world are beginning to take up the fight against climate change. They are no longer waiting for politicians on a national level to take action or to reach consensus in the tough negotiations for international climate agreements.
