The redesign of the Holstenfleet in Kiel was planned by bgmr Landschaftsarchitekten from Berlin and executed by Rumpf Garten- und Landschaftsbau. Now the new square has been awarded a German Landscape Architecture Award in the category Public Space as a Centre. For the paths, surfaces and benches, the landscape architects chose Kebony Character, a wood decking made from FSC-certified Scots pine treated with bio-alcohol. The basin’s purification system consists of a mixture of planted bottom filters, mechanical filters and technical equipment, and ensures that the water in the Holstenfleet’s canal basins is circulated and constantly purified.
