Civic Library in Waterford

Opened initially in 1905, the old Carnegie Library has now been converted with great sensitivity and complemented by a new structure. Old and new sections of the complex are clearly differentiated both internally and externally in their formal language and in the choice of materials. The four storeys in which the open-shelf section and other departments are housed are distinguished by specially made furni-shings and shelving matched to the various functions. The services offered in the atrium of the library are used by young and old alike. Activities range from reading the newspapers in the morning to special events for children and surfing free of charge on the Internet.
