Comprehensive School in Splügen

The comprehensive school in Splüngen that serves the various communities of the Rheinwald valley was erected there at the end of the 1960s. The building is not just as an educational institution, though; it is also a centre for cultural events, sports and political activities and thus provides an important amenity for the entire valley. After many years in which no changes had been made to the school, it was urgently in need of attention. Neither its technical condition nor the spatial facilities permitted a modern functional use. The insulated skin is now articulated by bays of colour in various shades of grey. The sheet-metal cladding strip to the verge and eaves emphasizes the transition from wall to roof. Bold colours indicate the route through the building and define the three functional realms: school, sports and cultural events.
