Cool lighthouse: Breakwater Beacon Jeddah, by UAP Architects.
Designed by UAP for the King Abdullah University of Science and Technology, this tower is a beacon for the institution, designed to be seen from the Red Sea as well as internationally across continents.
The tower known a Breakwater Beacon is 60m high and is made with hexagonal structural cells that form a punctuated structural surface.
As well as marking the development aspirations of the kingdom, and the academic aspirations of the university, it is also serves as a cooling tower, forming part of a natural ventilation system for the foyer of the university building it serves.
The tower is made from individual pre-cast concrete blocks. Looking-up gives the sublime impression the hexagons are swarming.
