The Perot Museum of Nature and Science designed by Morphosis is now under construction in Dallas, Texas.
On a 4.7-acre site in Victory Park in the center of Dallas, Texas, the new Perot Museum of Nature and Science designed by Thom Mayne and his Los Angeles based architecture office Morphosis is rising: A 180,000-square-foot building that is, according to the firm, “conceived as a large cube hovering over a landscaped plinth”.
The building will be clad in textured concrete panels and the south façade will feature a 150-foot-long escalator that is encased in an angled glass box.
The museum’s program includes galleries, a theater, cafe and store as well as space for educational and administrative functions.
A path descending from the top floor through the museum’s galleries weaves in and out of the building’s main circulation atrium. Thus when walking through the museum the visitor is alternately facing the museum’s interior and its urban surrounding. The museum thereby opens up to the activities of the city and the public.
As other projects by Morphosis the Perot Museum is designed to minimize its impact on the environment and to achieve the highest LEED standards possible for a building of its type.
The Perot Museum of Nature and Science is intended to enhance the institution’s prominence and to enrich the cultural life of Dallas. It is scheduled for completion in 2013.
