The exhibition “Design With the Other 90%: Cities” focuses on the 90 per cent of the world’s population traditionally not addressed by the design industry.
"Design with the Other 90%: CITIES," is the second exhibition in a series that examines the complex issues arising from the unprecedented rate of urban growth projected for the next 20 years, primarily in the informal settlements of the global south: Close to one billion people currently live in slums, a number projected to double by 2030.
The exhibition, curated by Cooper-Hewitt, National Design Museum takes place at the United Nations headquarters in New York until January 9, 2012. It explores the interdisciplinary, overlapping relationships among urban planning and design, education, social entrepreneurship, climate change, sanitation and water, migration, public health and affordable housing.
60 projects from 22 countries from designers, architects and social activists worldwide are organized for the exhibition into six themes – exchange, reveal, adapt, include, prosper, access –to show the variety of approaches including design solutions that connect people to greater economic opportunity and to each other by increasing their sense of community.
The information gathered in the field will be made accessible by the National Design Museum through an online open-network database to enable designers and community stakeholders to work together to develop design solutions for a sustainable future of informal settlements of the global south.
