With the new university children's hospital in Basel, Switzerland, the large-volume urban structure acquires a further massive edifice. In order to retain the permeability and transparency of the urban spaces, Stump & Schibli Architekten BSA decided in favour of a composition consisting of several parts. Nevertheless, the 5-storey building appears as a compact, unique unit. This is primarily achieved by a striking facade design. Due to refraction, a reflective, multi-layer coloured film that is laminated into the safety glass produces a variety of colours. Depending on where he or she is, an observer sees the design-endowing horizontal parameter strips as bright yellow, luminescent orange or gentle green. This colour effect is continued on the facade of the planted interior courtyard. All patients' rooms face this yard, which creates a peaceful green oasis that can be used for convalescence.
