The Most Popular Contributions in February 2024

In February, our readers were particularly enthusiastic about the following three contributions: The SIP Main Campus in Allschwil, a residential building in Eindhoven and skyscrapers in Dubai with a record-setting cantilever.

The building block by Herzog & de Meuron, which measures 50 000 m², is the central and largest component of a new business park that has been created in Allschwil over the past few years. Its landscaped courtyard is around the size of a soccer field. It opens to the outdoors with two facing, two-storey passageways, thus extending the central green axis that runs through the entire area. The courtyard is enlivened not only by the people who work in the complex, but also by trees, planted beds and climbing plants that in future will grow upwards on the concrete piles of the building. Four generously proportioned spiral stairways provide access to the building from the inner courtyard. Continue reading

Gaaga designed Het Bosbad as a built continuation of the surrounding green space. © Melchior Overdevest

At Het Bosbad residential complex, peeled tree trunks bear the load of the balconies and galleries. The new-build is located on the northwestern outskirts of Eindhoven, surrounded by tall trees that line a canal directly behind it. This setting was a great source of inspiration for the design concept, which is also inspired by a Japanese practice in which you absorb nature with all your senses to calm your body and mind. The construction of the new-build aims at recyclability and easy disassembly. According to Gaaga, more than 85 % of the material weight can be reused or recycled in the future. Continue reading

A record-setting cantilever: The skyscrapers by studio Nikken Sekkei are connected via a three-storey bridge. © Hufton & Crow

The two One Za' abeel towers by Japanese architecture studio Nikken Sekkei rise 235 and 305 m into the skyline between the airport and the city's financial district. At a towering 100 m above the ground, the skyscrapers are connected via a spectacular, 230-m-long bridge. The Link, as the glazed, three-storey link is known, juts 67,5 m – a world record. A six-lane highway roars beneath the bridge and between the skyscrapers. The Link, which required around 10 000 t of steel structure, was assembled above the highway in two stages. The glazed steel construction, which spans 21 m, is connected to the skyscrapers in two spots. The rhombic supporting structure remains visible even in the interior thanks to the glazing.
