Digital Measurement as a Planning Basis

Erfurt-based architects hks Architekten are using Open BIM and 3D planning for the conversion of the city’s listed former heating plant. The model is based on a laser scan of the existing building and the resulting 3D point cloud generated by the surveyor. Architects and surveyors defined the section and resolution of the scan points in order to optimise the file size and performance of the CAD application. The original file was 100,000 MB in size, and the reduced file just 500 MB. The "slimmed down" point cloud was imported into Archicad as a dimensional reference. hks use Archicad for everything from the modelling through to the detailed planning, also because of the interfaces to the Solibri model checker and the Cinema 4D visualisation software. In the case of the heating plant, they only recreated the elements that were to be comprehensively adapted or altered for structural design purposes. Due to the Corona pandemic, Graphisoft is currently offering free emergency licences and a BIMcloud teamworking solution for the German and Austrian markets.
