Discreetly conspicuous: Moesgaard Museum in Denmark

This year the Moesgaard Museum in Skåde, located south of Aarhus, has already won several distinctions.
The Moesgaard Museum, which measures 16,000 m², was designed by Henning Larsen Architects in cooperation with Kristine Jensens Tegnestue. The long, sloping roof is particularly striking, for it extends into the hilly landscape surrounding Skåde. Rooftop grass, moss and other plants add a certain effect in the summertime, while the slope serves as a sledding track during the winter months. Furthermore, the plants on the roof help reduce the museum’s energy consumption: its lower heat uptake means lower cooling requirements. The sloping roof also sheds water in the most natural way.
This museum of cultural history offers space for conferences, concerts, lectures and sports events. The reception hall forms the heart of the building and is home to ticket sales, the museum shop and an in-house café. The foyer also leads visitors to the rooftop terrace. Moreover, generous glazing offers visitors a panoramic view of the Bay of Aarhus.
This year, the museum is winner of the Civic Trust Awards and is the Jury Award winner in the Museum category of the Architizer A+ Awards. The Moesgaard Museum was inaugurated and opened its doors to the public in October 2014.
