Ecobuild 2014 – Championing a Greener Built Environment

The event hosts the most comprehensive showcase of sustainable construction products in the world. It provides a platform for businesses representing the entire spectrum of sustainable construction products for new build, refurbishment, residential, commercial and industrial projects.
At its 10th anniversary, again, Ecobuild brings together the entire supply chain in order to realise the vision of delivering a more sustainable built environment. On the first day, The Independent’s architecture critic will sit down with this year’s RIBA Gold Medallist, Joseph Rykwert to get his answer to the question ‘How can we think about the fabric of our cities when all decisions about them seem to be taken by speculators and developers?’.

Later, the former RIBA President and current Director of Brady Mallaieu, Angela Brady will host a debate on what Britain has to offer China. A session which will hear from representatives of Terry Farrell & Partners, Wilkinson Architects and the UKTI who will be using the SWOT matrix to evaluate the opportunities the Chinese market could provide.

Another session will see Sir Terry Farrell talk over the outcomes of The Farrell Review - looking into the role of design in creating better places for people to live, work and play in. The debate will be chaired by Peter Murray, Chairman of NLA and will focus on the ingredients needed for successful design.

The conference programme will be supplemented by six unique seminar streams which are set to tackle key issues currently facing the industry. Three key areas for Detail readers are the Design zone, Refurbishment & Retrofit, and Building Performance & BIM.
The Design zone, held in association with Saint-Gobain, will look at the most cost-effective ways of delivering sustainable projects, tackling issues including lighting, fabric, services, adaptation and designing for productive environments. The ILP will be returning for 2014 with their dedicated Lightscence arena, built to showcase the most innovative lighting products, and will be running a Professional Development Zone packed with CPD seminars.

The Refurbishment & Retrofit zone, sponsored by Glow-worm, will cover commercial and domestic solutions necessary to improve our existing building stock and meet the government’s carbon reduction targets.

The role of new and existing innovations, such as Building Information Modelling (BIM), will be a central feature of the 2014 show. The Building Performance & BIM zone will feature a variety of exhibitors showcasing their latest digital offerings and will include sessions such as ‘Overcoming procurement challenges to close the performance gap’ which will feature a case study from Aedas, hearing from the architect, the M&E engineer and the contractor.

As well as the informative programme, visitors to the event will be able to see innovative solutions and get practical advice with dozens of inspiring and interactive attractions. 2014 will include: Solar City, Practical Installer, Regeneration Film Festival, the Royal Docks Ideas Competition and the Biodiversity Pavilion. This year will also include the UK-GBC Village allowing visitors to trial Pinpoint, their online platform for sustainability tools, training, and resources, as well as taking advantage of the exclusive membership offer available during Ecobuild.
Ecobuild 2014 will also feature an unrivalled information programme, attracting over 600 speakers. At the heart of the programme is debate, learning and information exchange, led by internationally renowned academics, ministers, industry leaders and celebrity speakers. All speakers will now appear on the show floor and there will be two spectacular arenas to house the conference programme.

In addition to the two arenas we will also introduce six new content zones to the show floor. Building Performance & BIM, Refurbishment & Retrofit, Green Energy, Design, Water, Waste & Materials and Future Cities will host Ecobuild’s seminar programme and drop in advice clinics delivered by industry leading organisations.
