Proceeding from a review of school-building in the 20th century, the article goes on to consider current developments in this field and the design of what is still the heart of most schools – the classroom. Various school systems are described, as well as constructional guidelines and changing educational programmes and their translation into architecture. The article also discusses the strict requirements imposed by school authorities – requirements that not infrequently stand in the way of innovative ideas. In a series of two-page documentations presented below, various school types are described and compared with each other in terms of their advantages and disadvantages.
