Elephant

In 2015, Menno Kooistra founded his architectural firm Elephant in Amsterdam. Before this, he studied architecture in Eindhoven and São Paulo, gaining experience at top Dutch firms and launching the DGBC Lab of the Dutch Green Building Council. The name Elephant reflects the architects’ ethos: “We chose the name Elephant because elephants leave the largest footprint of all land creatures – and within this footprint, new microhabitats are created, and biodiversity thrives. We stand for our footprint and believe in its potential for good.” The firm’s scope encompasses urban planning, building design, and engineering services, with a strong emphasis on adaptive reuse. Notable projects include converting the Fluor office building in Haarlem into apartments and transforming the De Voortuinen residential tower in Amsterdam, formerly the Dutch Postal Savings Bank headquarters.
