Exhibition David Adjaye: Making Memory

Seven places of remembrance; seven different stories. The remarkable thing about the work of British architect David Adjaye is his intention to make every visit to his buildings an emotional experience that will foster lasting consideration.

At the National Museum of African History and Culture (NMAAHC) in Washington, DC, it is Africa’s cultural heritage – which is deeply rooted in American history – that is thematized. The monumental building features enormous, self-supporting spaces flooded with natural light. An oculus allows light refracted by water into the memorial room, creating a unique atmosphere of reflection and tranquillity. Visitors will perceive the importance of empathy among various cultures.

This project is just one of seven to be shown in the exhibition. All have been built in order to encourage an exchange of ideas between architecture and the world. This dialogue aims to open our eyes and broaden our horizons.
