Experimentarium by CEBRA reopens in Denmark

The international architecture competition for enlargement of the Experimentarium, a science museum in Hellerup, near Copenhagen, was won by CEBRA in 2011. Along with a doubling of the exhibition space, the brief required construction of a new roof terrace, café and congress centre as well as modern offices and teaching facilities.  The building – which originally served as a bottling plant for the Tuborg Brewery – has been transformed by the CEBRA architects into a lively attraction for children and adults.

At the re-opened Experimentarium a completely new setting that provides science and technology a new architectural expression awaits visitors, as evidenced by the depiction of flow dynamics on the facades and the spectacular spiralling staircase just inside the entrance of the building. Produced out of 160 tons of steel and clad in 10 tons of copper, the structure winds its way throughout the whole of the museum, which has also gained several interactive exhibition areas.  In design, the copper-clad, 100-metre-long staircase takes its inspiration from the helical structure of a DNA strand in abstract form. As the building's shimmering centrepiece, it indeed substantiates the scientific focus of the enlarged Experimentarium.
