Fine Dust Filter from Moss
Start-up Green City Solutions’ CityBreeze combines digital display technology with air-purifying moss walls. The panel was developed together with Visual Art. On one side is the moss wall and on the other a 75-inch LED screen. In addition, telecommunication infrastructure (small cell) and air-quality sensors can be integrated into it.
Mosses have a very large surface area, comparable to the human lung. Fine dust particles from the drawn-in air are electrostatically attracted to it and remain attached to the surface as to a microfibre cloth. The difference, however, is that the moss does not release the fine dust particles elsewhere, but metabolises them. According to Green City Solutions, the CityBreeze panel thus cleans up to 1500 m³ of air per hour and reduces the fine dust in it by 82 %. In addition, the mosses produce oxygen and moisture evaporates on their surface, so that the ambient air is up to four degrees cooler.
To make the mosses, which have to grow in nature for 4 years, available more quickly, Green City Solutions has set up its own moss farm. There, mosses grow on vertical moss mats that can be used after only twelve weeks.
