Footbridge in London

Designed to provide a safe link between two school buildings across a busy road, the bridge is enclosed over its entire S-shaped length within a membrane covering. The membrane, which is stretched over identical, asymmetric arched girders assembled in changing directions, serves to stiffen the structure and can be post-tensioned. The bridge rises by a height of two metres to the crest and abuts the two school buildings at its ends. A welded sheet-steel outlook point was inserted over the road. The base structure consists of a welded sheet-steel hollow section ramp between two curved, steel Å-beams. The entire construction is supported by four different steel-plate columns. The assembly work was executed in the course of a single night.
