The Serpentine Gallery featured a Garden Marathon last weekend with Stefano Boeri, Dan Graham, Peter Zumthor and others.The Garden Marathon that took place at London’s Serpentine Gallery last weekend was part of the Gallery’s Marathon series with the intention to further explore the concept of the garden.
Approximately 50 participations ranging from the fields of horticulture, design and architecture like Stefano Boeri, Elizabeth Diller, Dan Graham and Peter Zumthor were invited to explore the creation of gardens and their spatial, urban and scientific importance through works by artists and readings by poets and writers exploring the significance of the garden in our experience of the world.
The event was inspired by this year’s Pavilion theme, the
hortus conclusus, designed by the architect Peter Zumthor,
as an encounter of architecture and garden, a contemplative space that is both set within – and meditatively separated from – the wider surroundings of Kensington Gardens.
“The hortus conclusus that I dream of is enclosed all around and open to the sky. Every time I imagine a garden in an architectural setting, it turns into a magical place. I think of gardens that I have seen, that I believe I have seen, that I long to see, surrounded by simple walls, columns, arcades or the façades of buildings – sheltered places of great intimacy where I want to stay for a long time.” - Peter Zumthor
