German Horticultural Museum in Erfurt

The Cyriaksburg, a listed, late-medieval ensemble with a moat, underwent extensive changes at the beginning of the 19th century. As part of its present conversion into a horticultural museum, an extension was added at the rear, with a glazed superstructure 16 m long and 3 m high. The extension, which assumes the function of the previous retaining wall to the moat, houses the entrance foyer, a shop and cafeteria, as well as the administration and a library. No structural changes were necessary to the historical building to accommodate the exhibition spaces. The extension shows the same restraint as the carefully refurbished existing structure, yet the lightness of the facades forms a lively contrast with the fortified rigour of the Cyriaksburg.
