motorlab architekten have designed a townhouse with a shimmering façade of exolated aluminum profile in shades of gold and yellow. The new building, which stands in Mannheim, offers space for offices, apartments, a clinic and a day-care centre.
The ground floor is home to Café NORD, which becomes a wine bar after dark. The L-shaped structure comprises two bodies: a seven-storey main building to street side and a two-storey rear building which faces the yard. A patio connects the two.
The ceiling surfaces are used as passive thermal storage and have therefore been neither suspended nor clad, but rather executed in exposed concrete. In order to reduce noise and produce good spatial acoustics, the wooden acoustic panels called Ligno Akustik light from Lignotrend were used to cover the reinforced concrete framework of the interior walls. The elaborate acoustic panels have been finished in genuine silver fir surfacing.
Along with good spatial acoustics, the planner placed great value on a sustainable energy concept: the new building is connected to the district heating network and the heated floors can be controlled individually. Furthermore, a controlled ventilation and cooling system which features heat recovery by means of rotary heat exchangers constantly provides fresh air. The glazed south façade is intended to harness solar energy. Moreover, the timber/aluminum window frames, certified by the Darmstadt Passive House Institute, allow as much daylight as possible into the interior space.
