High-Rise Refurbishment in London

The Empress State Building has been a landmark in west London since 1961 – the free-standing tower having been used by the Ministry of Defence until 1998. In 2001 Wilkinson Eyre received the commission for the renovation. The most prominent alterations are the new four storey roof construction which includes a rotating restaurant and the façade extension on the southern side; 5.5 m deep and 26 storeys high. A more modern image is created and additional space provided by the new glazed extension with its aluminium sun shading.
