Hiroshi Senju Museum Karuizawa designed by Ryue Nishizawa of SANAA just opened to the public.The Japanese architect Ryue Nishizawa, co-founder with Kazuyo Sejima of SANAA architects, completed the design and construction of the Hiroshi Senju Museum Karuizawa in Karuizawa, Japan.
The museum is a single-story 1820 m2 building placed in the so called newly designed Color Leaf Garden that is to act as a natural buffer zone for visitors: The site surrounding the new cultural facility was extensively planted with 60.000 plants of 150 varieties with the objective to actively influence the atmosphere within the gallery with the changing palette of the leaves.
The design of the Hiroshi Senju Museum Karuizawa is a collaborative effort between Ryue Nishizawa and the Japanese artist Hiroshi Senju, whose paintings from 1978 to the present day are on display at the new museum.
The museum’s floor follows the existing contours of the land, while a series of organically shaped green courtyards puncture the building interior space.
To control the amount of daylight intake the deep eaves, silver screens, and UV-cut glass panels were introduced.
Ryue Nishizawa explains the building concept: “Senju asked me to create an open, luminous space where people would observe his works, relax and spend time in contemplation. The museum, which gently hugs the natural slope of the site, has lighting controlled by deep eaves, silver screens, and UV cut glass while allowing in the greenery. The open space was designed to unite Kazurizawaʼs nature and Senjuʼs art. I wanted to create a union of park and space that felt as inviting as a private living room.”
