House and Studio in Münsterland

When questioned about his exposed concrete walls, Tadao Ando once explained that they are abstract, without presence, only the space which they encircle creates a feeling of true existence. A sense of the abstract is also created by this residential atelier building in Münsterland. Through material and form, the building distances itself from the surrounding built environment while simultaneously producing a private retreat with strong association to nature for the residents. The reserved, almost neutral end product is punctuated by very few design accents – the space itself is what is important here.
