House in Barcelona

The strict external cubic form of the house in facing bricks (see Detail 1996/7) is reflected in the clear, logical design of the interior. The entrance situation determined the form of the single-flight staircase, which is conceived as a piece of furniture one can ascend and descend. It is fabricated in wood and contains open box-like shelving in the space beneath the stairs. Along the entire length of this element is an open stairwell that allows a maximum amount of daylight from a roof light above to penetrate to the heart of the house. The ingress of natural light is supported by an area of glass flooring at first floor level. There is no handrail, but the staircase opening is enclosed on the upper floor by a transparent glass balustrade
