House in Dresden

With its large areas of glazing, this single- family house in Bühlau, a district of Dresden, opens on to an adjoining orchard. The untreated larch window frames and opening elements strike a warm note against the sand-coloured rendering to the facades. On the ground floor, the windows are set flush with the outer face of the building. On the upper floor, in contrast, they are deeply recessed and surrounded by wood-lined reveals. The house was deliberately planned in a modest, economical form, and the maintenance this implied was agreed in advance with the client. In their bid to design simple details, the architects did without a number of internal finishings such as skirtings and staircase handrails.
