House in Shimane

The house is situated in west Japan, in a region that experiences marked climatic contrasts between seasons. In summer, there is subtropical heat, while winter is characterized by icy temperatures and deep snow. The house is buried in a mound of stone rubble that does not absorb moisture. The glazed roof is oriented to the south to maximize solar gains in winter, while air cavities form a thermal buffer. When buried in snow, the stones shield the ground floor against wind and cold, while in summer they maintain a temperature balance. It is then that the timber structure comes into its own. By opening the entrance gates and the glazed sliding elements, the entire house is cross-ventilated from the patio.
