Housing and Commercial Building in Böblingen

The building adopts the height of the adjoining structures in the road. A broad cantilevered roof at the top over the set-back living storey stresses the independent form of the cube. The open fronts facing on to the public square consist of room-height areas of glazing alternating with bays of wood louvres, behind which are opening lights. The louvres serve as solar shading and also as a guard against falling. The staircase tract is in a solid, closed form of construction with a two-leaf exposed concrete wall and slit windows. Internally, too, untreated concrete surfaces dominate. The timber window surrounds and a few painted areas are the only colour notes. The floors are supported on six exposed concrete columns and allow a flexible layout.
