Housing Block in Berlin

This six-storey block of publicly assisted housing contains 31 dwellings. The close proximity of the 24 identical, south-facing balconies meant that visual and solar screening, neighbourly relations and privacy were key factors of the design. Inset in part into the façade and partly projecting from it, the balconies allow residents the choice of withdrawal or exposure. Depending on the position of the pivoting/folding shutters, one can choose between sunscreening for the living room or a sheltered corner for sitting. The balustrades, consisting of standard metal gratings, prevent diagonal views through them, but allow an unimpeded view out from the living rooms. A set-back handrail is designed to accommodate flower boxes.
