Housing Block in Merano

In its size and function, this four-storey box-like housing block corresponds to the surrounding developments; in its formal language and use of materials, however, it is strikingly different in appearance. The type of construction, using large-scale, prefabricated, solid timber panels, ensures not only a clear composition, but great structural rigidity. According to the architects, the system can be used for buildings of ten storeys or more in height. At the same time, it is easy to assemble, and the panels also provide thermal storage mass. The dwellings open towards the south-west via spacious loggias supported by cantilevered cross-walls. Sunshading and visual screening is provided by coloured fabric panels. The lively chequerboard pattern created by these elements reflects the reversed layout of the dwellings from floor to floor. Set outside the block along the north-east and south-east faces is a steel structure with access galleries, stairs and a lift. Here, the pavings and steps are in larch. Drawn over these two facades is a fine curtain of metal mesh that will be covered with plant growth in the future, creating a green filtering screen. A covered communal terrace on the roof is flanked by solar collectors and large areas planted with palms. The weight of these areas – equivalent to that of two additional storeys – demonstrates the load-bearing capacity of the system.
