Housing Development in Trondheim

With the decline of the workers’ district of Svartlamoen in Trondheim, the city developed an environmentally friendly housing concept. Sustainability, low costs and an innovative use of wood were among the aims formulated in the competition brief. The prefabricated, solid-timber load-bearing elements of these two blocks can be assembled on site within ten days. The roughly 15 cm thick outer walls are additionally insulated, and lined externally with untreated wood cladding. Each floor of the taller structure affords space for groups of five to six people, while the lower block contains six one-room flats. The interior was left in an unfinished state, allowing the 31 residents to implement their own ideas.
