Housing in Berlin

The two four-storey blocks described here form part of a larger development and infill programme in an existing housing area. The blocks contain two three-room flats on each floor, with two smaller flats and ancillary spaces on the ground floor. The neutral layouts allow scope for flexible use. Sliding doors permit the spacious entrance hall to be opened up as an extension of the living area. The central staircase and storage spaces form a buffer zone between the individual flats. With the exception of the north face, which opens on to the courtyard, the external skin is in blue-brown engineering bricks. A single window element with an integrated sliding panel and a brush-finished stainless-steel balustrade was designed for all situations.
