Housing in Ypenburg, Netherlands

The 14 houses, linked by smaller structures to form a gently curving row, mark the first stage of a larger development on a former airport site. The houses had to be completed within a period of nine months. An industrial precast concrete unit system was, therefore, chosen for the structure, combined with prefabricated glazed or timber-clad façade elements. The external walls are in a two-leaf construction and consist of an inner, load-bearing skin of precast concrete units and a brick outer skin, with a ventilated cavity between the two. The entrance is marked by an angular element with a translucent front and timber cladding to the side. The unit also allows the ingress of daylight and provides a glazed lookout on the third floor.
