Housing near Graz

The bright yellow colour of this development near Graz is deliberately contrasted with that of the surrounding housing fabric. The formal design exploits new system theories such as fractal geometry, fuzzy logic and chaos theory. The architects used computer-generated standard forms, relying on the specific topography and the dimension of time to counteract the linear ordering structures. The various cantilevered elements are meant to articulate concepts of time and movement. It was necessary, of course, to coordinate the chaotic structures with the requirements of publicly assisted housing, which prescribe standard window and door dimensions, for example. The development has a reinforced concrete structure with full thermal insulation. A uniform texture was specified for the external rendering to provide a balance to the animated form of the building. The north and south facades in particular, with their cantilevered elements, establish formal links with the surroundings. All dwellings have terrace-like balconies or private gardens.
