Scatos comes from a medieval word for shadows. The Dutch ceramic designer, Joke Burkes, has a fascination with shadows. He observes them with a passion - photographing and drawing them until he captures their ethereal quality. He then transforms that fleeting moment first into clay and then into ceramics.
His delicate designs seem harmonious and natural and are characteristically coloured with earth colours. When those ceramic pieces recast their own shadows a design circle is completed and the piece becomes whole.
Since the mid 1970s Joke Burkes has had over thirty exhibitions in the Netherlands and abroad.
