Information Tower in Munich

The sensitive city-centre location of the tower imposed strict demands on the quality of its design. Nevertheless, it was to have the character of a lightweight provisional structure, and be economical and quickly erected and dismantled. Standard building containers with side dimensions of roughly 2.5 ? 6 m were used for the staircase and upper floors. The ground floor containers were custom-built. They are 30 cm higher than usual to allow space for technical installations beneath the ceiling, and they have large areas of glazing externally to attract passers-by into the information shop. The colour-printed advertising screens over the face of the upper storeys also provide sunshading for the offices behind. The screens are translucent and allow a virtually unimpeded view out. The space between them and the containers allows air to circulate, which helps to prevent overheating.
