There seems to be limitless possibilities as to the architectural meaning that timber can express. Here the architectural practice BIG, have used it to reference the rich local mining heritage to create the winning entry for the new Kimball Art Centre in Utah, USA. The external façade, built from raw logs, twists to enclose a spiral stair that forms a sculptural centre piece leading from the entrance, to the roof terrace where outdoor exhibitions will be held.
The reference to local mining resonates with the institution whose original building started as a livery stable, then a motor vehicle garage before Bill Kimball and friends transformed it into a community centre for the visual arts. It is now home to the Sundance House during the Sundance Film Festival. The renovation and extension proposals will see two new galleries created with a restaurant as well as other spaces. The centre's existing building will become an educational hub complimenting the functions of the new art centre.
