Kindergarten in Lustenau

One of the striking features of this kindergarten is the spatial integration of an old footpath into the building. This enabled the historic pattern of routes to be retained and also provided access to the complex from two sides. The old path, in the form of a glazed passageway, leads through the building, dividing it into two parts: acompact structure at one end, in which the ancillary spaces are accommodated; and an elongated tract containing the main kindergarten facilities and group rooms, all of which are oriented to the south. This tract is constructed of prefabricated box-section elements. The three units that form the group rooms open onto the garden. Internally, these spaces are articulated into two realms. In the lower-height areas with galleries, the children can withdraw from general activities or occupy themselves insmaller groups, while still remaining in visual contact with the others. The main areas, roughly 4.20 m high, are suited to playing andother activities that require more space. The walls, ceilings and furnishings are in homogeneous, warm wood tones, with areas of palebirch veneer and plywood cladding.
From all points inthese spaces, the children enjoy aclear view of the garden outside.
A canopy roofdrawn over the entire length of the main tract forms an intermediate zone between indoors and outdoors, with sheltered recesses clearly related to each of the group rooms. Incontrast, the garden provides a common play area that unites the activities of all the children.
