Wood for a Children’s Area

For the Kinderwelt Anoha in Berlin, the US-American office of Olson Kundig designed a ring-shaped room-in-room construction made of wood, which forms a deliberate contrast to the skeleton construction of the wholesale flower market hall in reinforced concrete dating from 1963. The concept, based on Noah’s Ark, houses animal sculptures by various artists made from found objects as well as recycled materials, and is designed to arouse children’s curiosity and get them exploring. The wooden room shell was designed by Berlin-based architects Engelbrecht, while Rubner Holzbau was responsible for the production of the special construction. Local spruce wood was used for the supporting structure, walls, ceilings and floors. Durable beech wood was additionally used for the interior decoration.
