Clinker and Joints

In Hanover, an ensemble of four residential buildings has been built according to plans drawn up by the architectural office Smaq.
A special feature of the buildings are the elaborately designed brick facades. The clinker used here was developed, produced and processed by clinker manufacturer Deppe, and the architects combined the red brick with red joints. The seemingly homogeneous facade is structured into cassette-like fields, which in turn incorporate decorative ornamental masonry with rhythmically-staggered clinkers. The bricks jutting out of the masonry create wandering shadow plays. The ornamental areas were implemented using shaped bricks with shadow gaps. To create areas with recessed masonry, the architects used a 90-mm-deep brick from Deppe.
